From Mission Systems to Assessment Leadership
A practical assessor's perspective.
Shawn Bilak brings more than four decades of experience across military operations, federal cybersecurity assessments, critical infrastructure, cyber risk and compliance, and CMMC.
His career began in the U.S. Navy as a Fire Controlman supporting mission-critical weapons, sensor, and command systems. That experience established the operational discipline, technical rigor, and mission focus that continue to shape his approach to cybersecurity assessment.
At the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Shawn led teams conducting NIST SP 800-53 assessments at enterprise scale, producing more than 300 assessment packages annually. He later applied that assessment mindset at Southern Company, supporting cyber assurance, federal cybersecurity requirements, risk and compliance across a $30B electrical, gas, and telecommunications utility.
Today, as founder of Bilak Security Solutions and a Lead Certified CMMC Assessor, Shawn applies those lessons to organizations preparing to demonstrate cybersecurity through objective evidence, repeatable processes, and operational reality.
